02 Dec 2024 - Macys, NYC Library, FAO Schwarz

This will be a relatively short update due to both days either side being rather big ones.
Today, we wandered downtown again to spend some time shopping at Macy's department store. This place is HUGE! The first time I saw it I thought that Myer in Melbourne would give it a run in terms of size, but when I actually had the time to explore, I was blown away!
Eight floors high, and a further two floors below ground! And Christmas decorations as far as the eye can see! Not to mention an awesome Santa's Village where visitors can "catch a train" to the North Pole and get a photo with Santa.
One of the extra special things about Macy's is that they have restored and preserved many of their 100 year old escalators. These things are simply amazing!
After shopping ourselves silly, we decided to head back to the NYC Public Library so we could have a look inside. We weren't disappointed. It was a beautiful old building, but there was no sign of the ghostly librarian. I think Egon, Peter and Ray must have really done their jobs right back in 1984!
Finally, we strolled down to Rockefeller Centre so I could take a look inside the world famous toy store, FAO Schwarz. On the way, I jokingly pointed to a bald guy across the road and asked "Is that Billy Joel?" I mean, the ONLY similarity between the two is the bald head, but Lizzie was soooooo excited that there was a celebrity nearby - until she realised that I was joking. The bruising on my shin will go down eventually!
Aside from seeing their big piano (not the same one from the movie Big, but rather an updated version of it), I have to say that FAO Schwarz was a huge disappointment. Only two floors, and really not that much in the way of cool toys. You'd see more in a big Toyworld store back in Melbourne!
But, I can say I've seen it now, and I have no need to go back.
After this, it was back home and a night of Hallmark movies (yes, Lizzie really is loving this place!).
Actually, whilst I think of it, our apartment is DIRECTLY opposite this little shop. Does anybody recognise it? (It was a different business when you would have seen it)
Stay tuned for the next update...
