Welcome to our holiday forums

13 November 2024

So much has happened over the last couple of years to bring us to this point. Let's bring you up to speed quickly:

Liz has long had a dream for a white Christmas in the year she turned 50. Initially, her plan was to spend a whole three months in New York City, immersing herself in the culture and hoping desperately it snowed whilst she was there. But over the years, the weather hasn't been such that a white Christmas was looking like a possibility. So Scott suggested they change the original plan a little, and spend a month in NYC and then head north to maximise the chance for snow on Christmas Day.

This lead to looking at touring through Vermont and Maine and, lo and behold, Liz began to think she could have a Christmas straight out of a Hallmark movie! Yes - Hallmark - the same company that makes those greeting cards also makes movies with similar sentiment. But their Christmas/holiday movies always feature beautiful little towns that are always covered in snow.

And so, Liz found a place called Woodstock (no, not THAT Woodstock), a quaint little village in Vermont that seriously looks like it's straight from a holiday postcard. More than that, she found the Woodstock Inn!

And just like that, we had planned to spend Thanksgiving in NYC, and then move on to Woodstock for Christmas!

Then Liz decided that it wasn't enough for this to be her dream holiday, but it should be Scott's as well! So she insisted on including Memphis in the trip so Scott could fuel his love of Elvis and visit Graceland! But wait, there's more:

Liz found an ice hotel - yes, that's a hotel made from ice! So she fell in love with the idea of staying a night there - which meant a visit to Quebec City in Canada. Scott figured that if they were going that far north, then it made sense to visit Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto as well.

Then Chicago was a logical choice to be their point of return to the US. Add in a southern swing to Orlando to do all things Disney (and to warm up a bit) before heading north to Washington DC and returning to NYC to fly home again.

Our travel dates are 20 November 2024 - 14 February 2025.

The flights are booked, as is the accommodation in NYC. A cute little one bedroom flat in the Upper West Side, a block from Central Park!

Throughout the trip, we will be joined by friends who are excited to share some of their time making Liz's dream come true.

The trip will take in NYC, Boston, Woodstock, Burlington, Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, Toronto, Chicago, Memphis, Orlando, Washington DC and back to NYC to fly home. That's a journey of over 4,000 miles (6,500 km)! If we were to drive, it would take us over 60 hours, so we will be mixing it up with planes, trains and automobiles to get ourselves around.

You are going to love the adventure. Don’t get into any arguments over the flags and you should be fine. Boston is still on our bucket list and we could not manage to get there on our last trip. Will be interested to hear your thoughts on that locality and the Cheers Bar.
